Anne Jordan

On Wednesday, January 13, 2010, Mrs. Anne Knight Jordan, widow of the late Carl Rankin Jordan, M.D., entered into eternal rest. Born July 8, 1918 in Ousley, GA to the late Willie M. Knight and Pearlie Brown Knight, Mrs. Jordan graduated from Cardoza High School and Cortez-Peters Business School, Washington, D.C. She worked for the Social Security Administration, the Department of Commerce, and the Department of Public Welfare in Washington, DC. Mrs. Jordan served in the Women's Army Corps as a PFC, in Europe, during World War II from April 1943 to May 1946. She then attended Howard University where she was initiated into Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., in 1947, was a member of the Neumann Club, and received a bachelors degree in English and French in June 1949. Mrs. Jordan was a lifetime member and officer of the N.A.A.C.P., active in the civil rights movement, a Civil Defense Coordinator, past President of the Auxiliary to the National Medical Association, co-founder of the Savannah Chapter of Tots and Teens, a member of The Legion of Mary, and Chairperson of the Southeastern Region of the National Association of Black Military Women. She was an active member of The Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years and a daughter, Rita Mignon. Surviving are her sister and brother, Mayme Quick and John Knight, her children, Carmen Jordan-Cox, PhD, Karen Jordan, M.D. PhD and her husband Kenneth Heyward, and Harold Jordan and his wife Karen Detamore, her grandchildren, Carla Jordan-Detamore, Courtnee Jordan-Cox, Keenan Heyward, Gregory Jordan-Detamore, and Kollin Heyward, seven nieces and nephews and several devoted friends who took good care of her during the last years of her life. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. followed by an 11:00 a.m. Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1707 Bull Street, Savannah, GA. Interment is in Arlington National Cemetery.
