Bo Yi (Ellen) Fu
On the early morning of September 11, 2013, former East Newark, NJ resident Bo Yi (Ellen) Fu passed away from cancer in the care of Hospice Savannah in Savannah, GA with her family by her side. She was 64 years old. Ms. Fu was born August 1, 1949 in Wenzhou, China to Shong Fu and Yu Ying Yeh. She was the sixth daughter of a family of nine children. She spent a portion of her young adult years from 1966-1972 in the Xinjiang Province, China helping revive the agricultural growth of the region. Ms. Fu then worked as an auto mechanic in the Guizhou Province until she emigrated to the United States in 1982 and was naturalized on March 14, 1989. When she first arrived in the United States, she worked at a furniture company, Intrex, in Harrison, NJ as a veneer specialist and stayed there for 10 years until the company closed down. She entered the United States Postal Service in the mid 90s and recently retired on October 2011 after working there for more than 15 years.
Ms. Fu was known for her great Chinese cooking, which would send her daughter’s grade school friends home with tantrums asking why their Western mothers didn’t make fried rice and similar Chinese dishes for them. Her coworkers would often plead with her to bring her cooking to their events. Ms. Fu enjoyed cooking and had planned on traveling and seeing new places during her retirement. Of recent years, she delighted in her grandchildren and spoiled them rotten as all grandmothers probably do. Her last smile was given to her 17-month grandson Riley as he entered her room with a Swiffer broom trying to clean up.
In early 2013, she had initiated her move down to Savannah, GA to be close to her family. She found solace in the Savannah Chinese Baptist Mission and met Pastor Wong through a common friend of her daughter’s. Ms. Fu also met a myriad of caring individuals including her new doctor, whom she referred to as the “only” doctor she ever liked. Many people visited her during this time and she regarded them as close as her own family.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, SuAnne Fu and Christoph Simon, grandchildren, Aidan and Riley. A service will be held Saturday, September 21 at the Bonaventure Funeral Home in Savannah, GA. Burial will take place in Greenwich Cemetery.
