Deacon Vernia Shavers, 77, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Hospice Savannah.

He was a native of Savannah, Georgia. Deacon Shavers was a member of Thankful Missionary Baptist church where he served on the Deacon board. He was member of Prince Hall Lodge #28.

He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Shavers, Sr. amd his mother Essie M. Jones Shavers.

He leaves to cherish his memories: wife, Mable Jones Shavers; children, Vernia Shavers, III of Detroit, Michigan, Ronald Shavers, of Backerville, California, Donald Shavers(Adeline) of West Germany, Melvin Shavers (Ruby) of Detroit, Michigan, Ricky Shavers, of Detroit Michigan, Joseph Shavers, of Dayton, Ohio, and Dr. Berlinda Shavers of El Cerrito, California; step-children, Kenneth Jones of Orlando, Florida, Jerome Jones of Savanah, Georgia, Michael Jones (Catherine) of Pembroke, Georgia,and Sheldon Johnson of Hinesville, Georgia; siblings, Leila Bowen of Savannah, Georgia, George Shavers of Savannah, Georgia, and Jimmie L. Shavers (Paula)of Durham, NC; devoted grandchildren, Darien Holmes of Savannah, Georgia, Georgia and Dareiona Jones of Savannah, Georgia; thirty four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Deacon Vernia Shavers, Jr., will be held 12 noon Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Thankful Baptist church, 820 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Rev. Frederick Fearby officiating. Interment: Magnolia Memorial Garden with Military Honors. Reposing at the church, Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. until hour of service.
