Fred John “Jay” Hughes, III, age 63, died Monday, February 12, 2012 at his residence with his family at his bedside.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, February 16, 2012 at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Father Craig O’Brien and Father Gavin Dunbar officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the church parish hall. Private family burial will follow with Timmy Jackson, Billy Jackson, Bennie Turner, Shelton Hughes, Frank Hardeman, III and Mark Milboer serving as pallbearers.
Jay was born June 19, 1948 in Washington, DC to the late Fred John Hughes, Jr. and Lisbeth Steig Hughes. Jay along with his father established the H-H of Savannah, Inc., opening on February 1, 1970, which was the Budweiser Distributorship here in Savannah. Jay and his father both were commonly known as the “Bud Men” to everyone.
Survivors include his loving wife of sixteen and half years, Gail Jernigan Hughes; two daughters and son-in-law, Karrie H. Emerson and husband Patrick of Gainesville, GA; Christian H. Shulla of Cartersville, GA; two sons and daughters-in-law, Timmy Jackson and wife Christie of Pooler, Billy Jackson and wife Tonia of Ellabell; six grandchildren, Taylor Jackson, Hunter Jackson, Meagan Jackson, Terriann Jackson, Shelby Jackson and Bailey Belle; one sister, Robin Hughes of Rincon. Jay was a friend to many many people over his life time.
The family will be receiving friends from 5-7 pm, Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Bonaventure Funeral Home.
