October 12, 1934 - January 5, 2019
Born in Hazelhurst, Georgia, Geraldine (Jerry) Elizabeth Walters, moved to Savannah when she was twelve. She was a member of the graduating class of Commercial High School, and as a young teen she worked at Lanes Drug Store Soda Fountain. It was there that she met Kenneth Walters, a young airman from Missouri stationed at Hunter Air Force Base. Ken fell in love with the “Georgia Peach,” and after agreeing to make their home in Georgia, he and Jerry married. Their strong faith and commitment to God and each other has been evident in their nearly 67-year marriage.
In addition to numerous volunteer roles including PTA President, Sunday School Teacher, Puppet Ministry Leader, and Children’s Church Administrator, she also worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for Stephens Tire Company. She was an active member of the Sanctuary of Savannah, her neighborhood, and the Coastal Georgia Emmaus Community.
She has been a consistent source of strength and encouragement to those who had the opportunity to know her. Her smiles were abundant, and she was a prayer warrior for many. She loved spending her afternoons on her sun porch with her husband, watching the birds and butterflies, and expressing gratitude for her many blessings.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Walters; daughters, Debra VanCott (Joe) and Kathy Burnsed (Bucky); grandchildren, Audrey Mixon, Andrew Mixon (Kim), Kyle Burnsed, and Kari Craven (Jonathan); great-grandchildren, Mattie and Callie Mixon and William and Lauren Craven; and a sister, Lavrene Wing (Bill). Family was truly her greatest joy and delight.
The family will receive visitors at the Sanctuary of Savannah on Saturday, January 12th at 10:30 a.m. A service to celebrate her wonderful life will begin at noon.
