Hubert Melvin Norton Jr

Hubert Melvin Norton Jr., 70, of Savannah and Reidsville, died Friday, November 27 in Bulloch County after a long illness.
Surviving are a daughter, Ashley Norton Hutcheson of Savannah; a son, Patrick Byrne Norton of St. Simons Island; a sister, Sandra McNure of Tifton; two brothers, Timothy Norton and Jay Norton, both of Savannah; two grandchildren, Sean Hutcheson and Ian Hutcheson, both of Savannah. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Norton Sr., and a brother, Jerry Norton, all of Savannah.
Hubert was born in Savannah in 1945. He attended 37th Street Elementary School, Wilder Junior High School; and Savannah High School, graduating in 1962.
Hubert attended Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, where he also worked as Sports Information Director. He left college before graduation to work full¬time at the Savannah Morning News and Evening Press in Savannah. Hubert married in 1970 and relocated to Miami, Fla., with his spouse, the former Patricia Robertson, of Savannah. Hubert worked at the Miami News for three years, primarily covering music concerts and book reviews. Hubert returned to Savannah in 1974 and resumed employment at the Savannah newspaper, where he remained until 1980. He moved to Reidsville in 2014.
Hubert always looked forward to the start of spring training, and was a diehard Braves fan. Hubert was a voracious reader whose favorite writer was F. Scott Fitzgerald.
The family will receive guests from 5-7pm on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Fairhaven Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel.
Interment will be private.
