Dr. John Garland Gary died Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at Candler Hospital. He was a native of Savannah. He was a member of Tremont Temple Baptist Church. He attended the public schools of Savannah and graduated with honors from Alfred E. Beach High School. His undergraduate studies began at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA and then he transferred to Howard University, Washington, DC and completed his Bachelors Degree. He joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. while completing his undergraduate studies at Howard University. Upon completion of his undergraduate studies, he was admitted to Howard University's School of Dentistry and there he received his DDS Degree. Also, after completing Howard's School of Dentistry, Dr. Gary joined the United States Army and served two years at Fort Stewart and achieved the military rank of Captain. Dr. Gary ventured to Los Angeles, California and had a successful private dental practice for many years. He left California and moved to Africa for six years before returning to Savannah and establishing another successful dental practice. Surviving: a wife, Joan Gary; a son, Marcus G. Gary, of San Leandro, California; a brother, Robert D. Gary, of Los Angeles, California; a daughter-in-law, Andrea Phillips-Gary, of San Leandro, California; an adopted sister, Geneva McKinney, of Los Angeles, California; a step son, Atty. Joseph Ervin, and a step-daughter. Dr. Ann-Margaret Ervin, both of Savannah, GA;two grandsons, Kunta Aungkh Heru and Neranti, both of San Leandro, California; cousins, Dr. Calvin E. King, of Nashville, Tennessee, Gwendolyn K. Butler and Louise K. Carter, both of Americus, Georgia, Danette Boston, of Savannah, Georgia, Patrice E. Boston and Brett H. Boston, both of Smyrna, Georgia.Funeral services for Dr. John Garland Gary will be held 9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 21, 2007 at Tremont Temple Baptist church, 1110 M.L.K., Jr., Blvd. Interment: Hillcrest Abbey East. Visitation: 6:30-7:30 p.m., Friday at the funeral home Chapel.
