John L.Ewis Gresham, Sr.

May 31, 1929 — July 22, 2013

On a beautiful spring morning, as the pink azaleas covered the grasslands and sun rays glistened among the sky in Oglethorpe, GA, God manifested his love and power in the lives of Samp and Dilcy Gresham on May 31, 1929 as their tenth child, John Lewis Gresham was born into the world.

John was baptized and became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Stephens, GA at an early age. He attended the public school system of Oglethorpe County. John moved to Savannah, GA at the age of 17. He joined Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church. He was united in Holy matrimony to Richardine Brantley on June 22, 1963. Five children were born to this 50 year union. John was employed by Savannah Machine and Shipyard as a Lead Painter for 33 years.

On Monday, July 22, 2013 surrounded by family and friends at Select Specialty Hospital, John took God's hand when he heard His call and was received into his bosom.

John was preceded in death by: his parents, Samp and Dilcy Gresham' son, John Lewis Gresham, Jr.; six sisters, Susie Keys, Inez Campbell, Katie Finch, Lizzie Gresham, Frances Bee Gresham,and Helen Jarrells; and two brothers, George and Sammie Gresham.

He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Richardine Gresham; four daughters, Wanda Chaplin (Sam), Renee Crawford, Paprice Simmons, and Tahisha Wright (Derrick) all of Savannah, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Malcolm Chaplin, Martin Chaplin, Nicholas Chaplin, Iyana Crawford, John Gresham, Jamaya Gresham, and Derrick Wright, Jr. all of Savannah, GA; three sisters, Mary Smith of Lexington, GA, Lena Harris of Brooklyn, NY and Earthell Wittlinger (Ulrich) of Savannah, GA; three godchildren, Gena Taylor, Dominic Miller, both of Savannah, GA, and Karla Baker of Atlanta, GA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, July 29, 2013 at Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church, 1110 M.L. King, Jr., Blvd. Interment, Magnolia Memorial Gardens. Public viewing, Sunday, 4-6 pm at the Chapel. Reposing at the church Monday 9:00 AM until hour of service.
