Joseph Ward1930 - 2021 Joseph ward was born on Hilton head Island S.C. on July 11, 1930. He moved to Charleston S.C. raised by Benjamin and Janie Ward. Who, preceded him in death. Joe attended Charleston S.C. Public schools where he excelled in football. In 1953, The family moved to Savannah Ga. Joe was a transfer athlete from Charleston, South Carolina, and made a name for himself on the track field. He attended Chatham county public schools graduated from Beach high school. After graduating he went into the US Army. Joe was employed by the USDA. After which, he went to work at Seaboard Coastline Railroad where he retired. In 1963, Joe was married to Dorothy T Gibbs. He had one daughter Pamela Ward of Savannah, Ga. Three departed step children Eugene Johnson III, Doris Gibbs , Samuel Gibbs jr.(all preceded him in death)two surviving step daughters Janice G Bolden, and Elaine G Gregory whom Joe named “Sparrow” In 2012 Joe was recognized for his exceptional athletic skills, at the 26th Annual Hall of Fame when he was inducted for his running yards in Football and exceptional performance in track and field. Joe was a member of Saint James AME for many years. Graveside service will be January 26, 2021 at 12pm. with military honors. Beaufort National Cemetery. Viewing: 11-5pm.
