Mrs. Louise Crim Johnson was born at Bradley Point on Wilmington Island on October 1, 1912. She was the seventh child of eight children born to Sylvia Bennett Crim and James Crim. Both parents worked on Wilmington Island; her mother as a domestic worker and her father as a shrimper. Her early education was received at the Bradley Point School before the family moved to the Old Fort in Savannah, Georgia where she completed her education at Cuyler Street School.
She met and married George Johnson, Sr. in 1930 and reared one son George, Jr. and one daughter, Sarah, in addition to several other children who she welcomed into her home as her own. Her husband, son and daughter all preceded her in death. She was also a devoted grandmother to Reval and Victor (both deceased), a loving great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. Mrs. Johnson also opened her home to several Savannah State College students who boarded with her during the 50’s and 60’s and came to regard her as their mother because of the love she provided them in her home.
God’s biggest blessing to this mild-mannered, genteel lady, who amazingly lived independently in her residence for one hundred years, was a reasonable portion of health and strength until her health waned just a few months ago. She leaves a lasting impression of humbleness and faithfulness to her God and an undeniable legacy of love to her surviving relatives and friends who include: a special son, Willie Haynes (Candice); a special daughter, Connie Kenney (James); two great granddaughters, Jessica Edwards and Sarah Gordon; one great-great granddaughter, Trinease Victoria Lorraine Gordon-Fuentes; a godson, Michael Johnson; a devoted friend, Annie Lee Thorpe, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Louise C. Johnson will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Wilmington Baptist Church, 3321 Skidaway Road; Rev. Joey Horton, Sr. officiating. Interment, Oak Grove Cemetery. Reposing at the church Tuesday 9:00 AM until the hour of service.
