Margaret W. Jones

March 27, 1933 — May 3, 2021

Mrs. Margaret W. Jones, 88, affectionately known
as “Mother”, to all who knew and loved her
(“Mudda” to her grands), passed away Monday,
May 3, 2021, surrounded by her loving children at
Candler Hospital. She was born on March 27, 1933,
to the late Mr. Henry C. Noble and the late Mrs.
Beatrice (Sally) Williams.
During her early teen years, Margaret headed &
fan-tailed shrimp on Thunderbolt docks and cleaned
homes in the Evergreen and Thunderbolt
communities, earning her own lunch money for
school. Her education was attending Powell
Laboratory and Beach/Cuyler School.

She was baptized at an early age at Central Baptist
Church, Thunderbolt, GA. Later on in life, she
moved her membership to St. Mary’s AME Church
of East Savannah, which was within walking
distance from her home.
In 1952 Margaret married the love of her life, Julius
J. Jones, Jr., an Army soldier stationed at Ft.
Stewart, GA. She was a devoted wife and loving
mother who spent her time rearing their 8 children.
With Julius’ tours of duty, the family traveled and
lived on many Army bases state side and overseas.
In 1965, Julius retired from Ft. Eustis, VA, and the
family moved to Savannah. Mother loved
reminiscing about life in Landstuhl, Germany, one of
her favorite destinations. Margaret had a quick wit
to her spirit; always the life of the party! Way into
her golden years, she’d always made people laugh
with her stories or jokes. For example, she attended
open house at this very funeral home, the director
told one of her daughters to bring back 100 people

for open house. With a quick and witty response,
Mother said “do you want them dead or alive? “
The director chuckled so hard that he couldn’t
respond! She also had friends in nursing homes that
she visited. The staff requested that she return
because not only did she cheer up patients, but also
cheered up the staff. She sacrificed a lot for her
children, so when they became adults, she said “it’s
my turn!” She loved shopping and dressing up and
the many stores she frequented, she was well
known as “Sexy Momma” and/or “Mother”. She
loved her high heels, even late in life with the aide
of her walker; she’d be wearing her high heels and
flashy accessories, everything matching. Mother
loved being independent; she was well active into
her late 80’s. She enjoyed cooking and organizing
her extensive wardrobe. She enjoyed the outdoors,
gardening and yard work. She would sit on her
walker and rake leaves. Many doctors commented
that’s what probably added to her longevity. She
lived a colorful life; never met a stranger and she

was beautiful person, inside and out. She loved
sitting under her carport waving and conversing to
anyone who came by including the young mail lady
with whom she’d always joked with. Mother was
well known for her historic knowledge of Savannah.
She also knew of various Black and White families in
the Thunderbolt area, as generations would ask
Mother about their family history.
In addition to her parents, stepfather, the late Mr.
Dennis Allen, she was the sole survivor of her five
younger siblings, who preceded her in death: two
brothers, James Williams; Matthew Allen, three
sisters: Shirley (died in infancy); Peggy Butts Hollis,
and Pearlie Mae Cuyler. At an early age, she was
reared by her grandparents, the late Mr. Albert &
late Mrs. Abbie Williams, where she was raised as
one of their own, and in that household all have
preceded her in death: five uncles; Albert Williams,
Jr, Warren Williams, Eddie Williams, Walter
Williams, Joseph Williams; three aunts: Catherine

W. Green, Ellen W. Royal, and Annie W. Kearse.
After 52-years of marriage, Julius passed away. She
was also preceded in death by her oldest son, Gary
W. Jones; three sons in-law; Charles Mitchell;
Timothy Norris; and Anthony Wolfolk.
She leaves to cherish her memories her beloved
children: two sons: Claude J. Jones; Marvin L. Jones;
five daughters, Cheryl J. Douse; Martha J. Mitchell;
Yolanda J. Wolfolk; Carolyn J. Chisholm, son in-law
Wesley; and Denise N. Mallory, son in-law Arthur;
14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 3
great-great grandchildren; one daughter in-law,
Donna Jones; one brother in-law, Mr. William “Billy
Cuyler; three sisters in-law, Mrs. Minnie Lou
Williams; Mrs. Loretta Allen; and Mrs. Cynthia
Jones, Newbern, NC; one aunt, Mrs. Cassie
Williams; A host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.
