Mrs. Margureite Marylyn Willis Taylor Spruill was born September 1, 1915 in Savannah, Georgia to the late Mr. and Mrs. James and Lillie Willis.
She was educated in the Chatham County Public School System where she attended East Broad Street School and Cuyler Beach School. She also attended Georgia State College.
Margureite met and married Eddie Taylor on August 29, 1961. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1972. She then married James Spruill who also preceded her in death.
Margureite was an avid lover of music who continued her education by taking private lessons. Margureite had a very long and successful career playing and singing for many churches throughout the Savannah and Philadelphia areas. In 1925 she joined St. James A.M.E. church where she served in several capacities including: Senior Choir and Music Director, on the Stewardess Board, the Hospitality Ministry, as a part of the Allen Christian League, and the Elegant Ladies Social-Civic Club which was organized in March 1955 to present. Margureite worked at Globe Shoe Store on Broughton Street where she started as an elevator operator. She then moved up to become a sales person in the children’s shoe department. She retired from Lite Brothers Department Store in Philadelphia, PA. She then returned to Savannah where she continued her music career.
She leaves to cherish her memories: daughter, Linda Overstreet; granddaughter, Vanessa Davis; sister Emma Franklin, Bronx, NY; brother, James D. Willis, Jr.; niece, Janice M. Stevenson (Rev. Daniel); grandnephew, Vincent Hill (Kelly); grandniece, Vida Stephens (Jessie); four great grand nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 11:00 AM from St. James A.M.E. Church, 632 East Broad Church. Interment, Laurel Grove Cemetery. Reposing at the church from 9:00 AM until the hour of the service.
