Mattie M. Campbell-Tolbert, the daughter of Susie Campbell was born December 11, 1931 in White Hall, SC. Her mother preceded her in death.
Mattie attended the public schools of Colleton County in South Carolina before moving to New York in her early years. While residing in Brooklyn, New York, Mattie worked many years as a seamstress.
She met and married Nicholas Bonner on June 28, 1961. When the union dissolved, she married Mr. Willie Tolbert on September 9, 1972. He preceded her her death.
Mattie returned to Savannah, Georgia in in the mid 70's and worked as the Head Cashier at McCory's Variety Store in the Oglethorpe Mall for many years before retiring. While employed at McCory's, she met two loyal friends, Casey Jenkins and Mary Ann Williams whom preceded her in death.
She joined First Metropolitan Baptist Church and was baptized by the late Rev. Elijah Jackson in 1975.
She leaves to mourn her passing: Theresa Wright-Frazier (John) of Brooklyn, New York and Ms. Ernestine Downs, of Walterboro, South Carolina; cousins, Ester Maxwell of Brooklyn, New York, Estelle Mannion, Lawrence Maxwell, and Ella M. Scott; dear friend, Casey Jenkins; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mattie Tolbert will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, October 7, 2011 in the Chapel of Williams & Williams Funeral Home. Interment, Hillcrest Abbey West.
