Richard E. Herndon

Richard E. Herndon, 94 of Port Wentworth, passed peacefully away March 23, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Richard was born in Aberdeen, MS January 16, 1922. He was the son on Susie Louvene Davis and Leonard Earl Herndon. Richard was the second child of nine brothers and sisters.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife on 69 years, Barbara “Bobbi” Cornell Herndon, sisters Mary Ezell and Julia Massey and brother Eugene Herndon.
He is survived by brothers Leonard Herndon of CA, Charles Herndon, Ray Herndon, Lyman Herndon, William Herndon, and sister Ann Pierce of MS. His four children, Barbara (William) Hamilton of Brooklet, GA, Richard (Helen) Herndon, Jr. of Midway. GA, Nancy (William) Barbee of Hardeeville, SC and Linda (Butch) Usher of Pinehurst, NC; six grandchildren, Kelly (John) Shipes, Chrissy (Ricky) Durden, Emily Barbee, Eliot (Ashley) Usher, Tracy (John) Middleton, Keith (Derisa) Hamilton; seven great - grandchildren, Nora Grace and Audrey Kate Usher, William Patrick Shipes, Riley Dru Barbee, Emma Elizabeth Durden, Katelyn Laurel and Robert Carson Hamilton. Additionally his faithful companion “Coco”, his Chi – Weenie dog.
While serving in U.S. Coast Guard he was on the boxing team and he was stationed in Savannah, GA. He met the love of his life Bobbi at a USO dance on York Street. Richard retired after 38 years working for Southern Bell Telephone in the PBX department and was an active member of the Southern Bell Pioneer Organization. He also helped to establish the Hargray Telephone Company in Hilton Head SC.
In addition he was a member of the Thunderbolt Masonic Lodge #693 F & AMs, Pt. Wentworth Lions Club, Pt. Wentworth United Methodist Church, Oscar Bell Sunday School Class. Richard is the oldest gentleman of the Pt. Wentworth UMC. He and Bobbi were avid campers and members of the Rebel Rousers Camping Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting. Springtime was his favorite time of the year as it was time for him and Bobbi to hit the road camping and traveling.

Visitation will be 6pm – 8pm Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Baker McCullough (Fairhaven) Funeral Home, Garden City Chapel

Funeral Services: 11:00 am Friday, March 25, 20016 at Port Wentworth United Methodist Church


Interment: Bonaventure Cemetery
