Thelma was the first of six children born to the late Dora Byrd on July 22nd 1931. She was educated in the Catholic school system in Savannah, Georgia. She met and married James W. Newton in 1948. To this union 7 children were born. She worked for many years as a housekeeper. Her last place of employment was a Cabrini Catholic Church as a cook and housekeeper.
Thelma entered into eternal peace on Monday, December 23, 2013. She is was preceded in death by: her husband, James W. Newton, Sr.; mother, Dora Byrd; brothers, Billy Byrd and Roderick Byrd; and aunt, Mildred Seabrooks.
She leaves to mourn her passing: seven children, Gwendolyn Crawford (Eugene), Janice Britt (Robert), Elaine Newton, Gail Newton, Gregory Newton (Maria), James Newton, Jr. (Terry), Joseph Newton (Linda); sisters, Eldora Jones, Mozelle Byrd, Patricia Ratcliffe; twenty two grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; six nephews; fives nieces; special friend, Thelma Flowers; and a host of other family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Thelma W. Newton at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 from St. Benedict The Moore Catholic Church, 556, East Gordon Street. Interment, Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
